Carer Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions for Care Workers from Abroad

Are you a Carer and have a question? We have put together some of the most frequently asked questions that we hope will assist you.

Q. Can I work in the UK?

Answer:

You are able to work in the UK if you have a UK Passport, EU Passport or Ancestral Visa. If you have a grandparent born in the British Isles you can apply for an ancestral visa allowing you to work in the UK. You are able to work if you have 'Right of Abode', 'Indefinite Leave', or have been granted asylum. We regret we are unable to offer work to holders of student visas and we are unable to help with applications for work permits. You can visit www.workgateways.com/working.html, which offers useful information on working in the UK - Tips & information on getting around, work visas, health, cost of living and banking

Q. Do I need to have a police check?

Answer:

Yes, when you arrive in the UK we are legally obliged to apply for a police check for you here. This takes about 3-4 weeks to process and costs £42.40 and is processed through the CRB (Criminal Records Bureau). Police checks from other countries are no longer valid in the U.K. Please look at the CRB website to check you can comply.

Answer:

You are paid weekly direct to your bank account upon receipt of your completed timesheet.

Holiday pay is paid monthly.

Q. How much will I be paid?

Answer:

Each assignment varies, but the minimum rate is £65.00 per 24 hours, + Holiday Pay. All board and lodging is paid for by the client as is your return fare or petrol for your car from your home to the client's location. Mileage allowance is 40p per mile.

Q. Do I need care experience?

Answer:

Some experience in care is helpful. Induction Training is provided by OxleyCare in Moving and Handling Patients, Infection Control, First Aid, Food & Hygiene. If carers are staying in the UK longer than 6 months they have the opportunity to enrol on National Vocational Qualification Level 2 in Care.

A completed St.John's Ambulance or similar course in care in your country of origin is an asset.

Q. Will I get regular work from you?

Answer:

We do have plenty of work for suitable care workers, but we are unable to guarantee work. You are likely to get more if you are flexible, prepared to travel and work with seriously disabled clients.
